Iwould like to express my heartiest congratulations to Sian Chay Medical Institution on the occasion of its 115th Anniversary cum Appreciation Nite.
Sian Chay Medical Institution, founded in 1901, has been providing free Traditional Chinese Medicine consultation, subsidized medicine and treatment to the community regardless of race, religion or social status.
Sian Chay was relocated to Geylang Serai in 1979 after their previous premise at 124 Bencoolen Street was acquired by the government for urban redevelopment purposes. Over the past two years, Sian Chay has set up two more branches; namely at 535 and 692 Geylang Road.
The rapid expansion of the network of branches; especially in Geylang Serai, has served more beneficiaries, including many non-Chinese clients and patients.
This reflects the reception of our multiracial communities towards TCM.
The 610 Geylang Main Branch takes care of stroke cases, 535 Geylang Road branch is dedicated to the cancer and tumour treatment, whilst the 692 Geylang Road Branch is focused on orthopaedic treatment and takes care of depression, psychological and insomnia cases. Collectively, the 3 branches in Geylang Serai handles over 46% of the monthly patient visits handled by Sian Chay Medical Institution or a daily average of 500 patient visits.
Sian Chay Medical Institution also outreach to other voluntary welfare organisations; eg Silver Ribbon (Singapore) to promote mental health advocacy and care in Singapore. This is the first of such a western-eastern treatment partnership.
Beyond TCM, Sian Chay is actively promoting community service and welfare, eg Hari Raya celebrations, community health screening and active ageing carnival etc.
I wish to applaud the management and staff of Sian Chay for their outreach services and healthcare for the community as well as their supporters and partners for their contribution and dedication to social service.
