Sian Chay Medical Institution Flag Day: Harvesting with Love

Trust, Action, Attitude, Conduct form the integrity and virtues of  charity work.

With a century of history, Sian Chay Medical Institution has always practiced its traditional virtues of charity, giving and helping the vulnerable regardless of social status, race or religion, to provide medicine for the public benefits. In the recent years, it has expanded its network of branches into constituencies. Now it 13 branches and 4 wellness centers islandwide.

The revenue of Sian Chay comes mainly from two major sources. Firstly, is the public donation from benevolent people. Secondly, it raises funds through charitable events with support from volunteers to sustain the growth and development of Sian Chay. In recent years, many immigrants actively participate in philanthropy services through Sian Chay. Some made anonymous donations. Some even assisted in the fund-raising projects in addition to their personal donations. And some did volunteer work during their spare time and never asked for reward. They are the benevolent ambassadors .

Every year, Sian Chay holds the annual Flag Day to raise funds through donation tin collections , pledgecard collections and direct appeal. was The Flag Day 2017 was on 3rd June. A total of 420 volunteers participated in the Flag Day 2017 in two separate periods; ie 8.00 am- 1.00pm, and 1.00pm- 6.00pm.

Different generations of volunteers participated in the Flag Day, including the new immigrants, students, and our elderly patients. They each held a tin to collect donations at public places and gave every donor a loving-heart sticker.

The Directors who participated the event included Chairman Toh Soon Huat, Organizing Committee Chairman, Mr. Teo Ngiang Heng, Vice Organizing Committee Adviser, Mr. Keak Lai Heng, and Directors Mr. Chua Swee Wah, Mr. Yap Seng Teck and Mr. Anthony Aiw.

Chairman Toh encouraged volunteers to actively participate in the charity work of Sian Chay to benefit more people and to serve more elderly and residents. He also shared his experience and thoughts of his philanthropy work with all. He said, “We hold the donation tins for fund-raising not only for taking pictures and posting on WeChat or Facebook. But more importantly, is to fulfill hope. At Sian Chay, a donation of $10 can subsidise a senior patient from low income family receiving free TCM consultation and medication. What you are doing is a meaningful action and you will surely reap result.”

Sian Chay welcome more loving-hearted people to come forward and to spread sunshine to more people together. It improves Sian Chay by creating awareness about Sian Chay; and to join Sian Chay to payback to the society by benefiting the public and create social harmony .

“Trust, Action, Attitude and Conduct form the integrity and virtues   of charity work”, which is the principle that Mr. Toh Soon Huat has always advocated and practised. He rallied more people to practise benevolence which is the purpose of our fund-raising activity.

Mr. Toh Soon Huat, Chairman of Sian Chay, promotes the 5 core values of Sian Chay, which are Forgiveness, Universal Love, Compassion, Gratitude and Blessing. He says, “From the society, for the society.” Hope everyone working together to care for the vulnerable and needy by contributing money or labour.  Nation Progresses, Family Prospers. Family Harmony, Successful Endeavours. Forward with the Nation, Bonding with the People. This is not only the commitment of Sian Chay, but also inherent responsibility and obligation of each Singaporean, Come on!

Tote Board has also given the maximum grant of $50,000 to Sian Chay to defray the cost of fund-raising for the Flag Day. The event ended at 9pm.
