Speaker of Parliament and MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Madam Halimah Yacob’s visit to Sian Chay’s Marsiling branch.

On 14th November 2016, Madam Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Parliament and MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, accompanied by the grassroots leaders and PA staff, visited Sian Chay’s Marsiling clinic. Mr. Toh Soon Huat, Chairman of Sian Chay Medical Institution hosted the visit. Marsiling clinic commenced service on 25th September 2016 and has been serving around 150 patients every day.

During the visit, Mr. Toh introduced to Mdm Halimah the Sian Chay brochures with four languages; namely, Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil. it included Sian Chay’s mission and core values as well as the medical charges and treatments. Mdm Halimah was very pleased.

She said, “it could not have come at a better time as many of her elderly residents from low-income families have chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure; while many others have knee and kidney problems.”

“About 30 per cent of the residents in Marsiling are Malays and another 15 per cent are Indians,” she said. “I have started distributing Sian Chay’s brochures during my house visits to encourage them to go for free TCM consultations there.”

Regarding TCM tuina therapy, Mdm Halimah said, “Racial confidence and harmony go beyond trying one another’s food or understanding the cultures and customs. It will go deeper and stronger if one group shows compassion and provides assistance to another through, for example, TCM.” she said. “I am glad that more Malay and Indian Singaporeans are going for TCM treatments.”

A Malay uncle said when being greeted, “Sian Chay provides excellent service. Frontline staff and physicians speak to us in Malay, making it easy for communication.” Mdm Halimah was satisfied with the arrangement of the visit.

On the day of visit, Mr. Toh and Mdm Halimah together celebrated birthday for a 80years old lady . All staff and patients sang the birthday song for the old lady. She was so touched with tears and said, “I’m very happy today. Thank you everyone for giving me an unforgettable birthday.”

At the end of the visit, Mr. Toh informed Mdm Halimah that Sian Chay would support and participate in the Health Fiesta on 14th January next year and to distribute 500 goodie bags to the needy residents. Mdm Halimah appreciated to his support. The visit concluded in a friendly exchange with buffet reception for the patients, staff and the guests including Mdm Halimah Yacob.
