Sport knows No Limits – giving a boost to Charity
——The “Kowloon Club Youth Group Charity Bowling Tournament 2018”
On 14 Apr, at 10:30, the Kowloon Club Youth Group’s 2018 Charity Bowling Tournament was held at a club at 2 Telok Blangah Road.
The Kowloon Club was established in 1990. It is chiefly a non-profit society made up of new immigrants from Hong Kong, and currently has more than 1,500 families as members. For a long period of time, the Kowloon Club has been organizing charity, cultural, entertainment and educational activities all year long to help member families integrate into the local community and give back to society. At present, it has under its wings several committees such as : the charity committee, cultural & entertainment committee, sports committee, IT committee, women’s committee and the Youth Group.
The “Kowloon Youth Group 2018 Charity Bowling Tournament” is the first charity bowling competition organized since the establishment of the Kowloon Club Youth Group. The event is mainly to raise fund for acharitable organization – Sian Chay Medical Institution.
At the event, Ms. Sun Xueling, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC remarked: “I am very happy to participate in this meaningful event. I am very pleased to see so many young faces, and I would like to encourage more young people to take part in charitable activities, to do good, and contribute towards the society. It is only when everyone gives generously & dedicates towards social causes, that the society can become harmonious and wonderful.”
Chairman of Sian Chay Dr Toh Soon Huat said: “We appreciate very much the support of Ms Sun Xueling, and are very grateful towards the Kowloon Club Youth Group for organizing this event which raised a substantial sum of $30,000 for Sian Chay. I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the youths to know more about Sian Chay, and help to share Sian Chay’s services with more needy elderly. It does not mean that one needs to have a lot of money to contribute towards charity. All you need is to have a kind heart and hold good thoughts, and try to transmit messages that will help spread positive energy. Say something nice – words that are kind and forgiving, and that itself is your contribution towards charity as a volunteer ! We are very thankful towards the kind support of Mr Philip Chan – he is someone I respect very much. He is very dedicated towards his wife, children, friends and the community, and that is wonderful !”
Chairman of Kwoloon Club Mr Philip Chan mentioned : “We would like to thank everyone for making time to participate in this activity. Many young people are here today, and we have also specially invited a young Member of Parliament to grace the occasion. When we interact with young people we also feel young. Seeing the participation of so many young people, I feel that I am full of vitality ! Don’t wait till you are of our age and have more money & leisure before doing charity ! You can do it from young. Those with money can contribute funds, and the others can contribute time and effort. I always share that: “ Those who give are more blessed than those who receive”. So let’s hope that from today onwards, we shall perform one good deed each day, and not to come only when there is a charity event. Treating people with kindness on a daily basis is also an act of charity. Once again, I thank our Guest-of-HonourMs Sun Xueling for her earnest support.”
The Organizing Chairman Mr Chen Yucheng who is a director of the Kowloon Club Youth Group exclaimed : “This is an exciting activity. The Youth Group is very honoured to be able to mobilize everyone to participate in this meaningful event and to contribute to the needy in society. Our purposes of organizing this event were to raise public awareness towards charitable causes, while providing friends, sponsors and organizations with a platform for friendship exchanges, as well as for jointly contributing towards charity. Such an event would also help strengthen the public’s understanding of both Kowloon Club and Sian Chay Medical Institution.”
At the site, Chairman Dr Toh Soon Huat mentioned: “If everyone justdonate $10 to Sian Chay, it will enable one low-income patient to benefit from Sian Chay’s medical service with free medication. Today you have helped not just 3000 persons, but 3000 families, because when one member falls ill, the entire family will be affected. You have therefore helped the patients move from sorrow to happiness, to relieve their suffering, and help create happy and healthy families as well as a harmonious society.”
For a long period of time, under the leadership of Chairman Dr Toh Son Huat, Sian Chay Medical Institution has been advocating the five core values of “Forgiveness, Universal Love, Compassion, Gratitude and Blessings”. Complimenting Singapore’s nation building effort and to create a harmonious society, it has also been promoting the concepts of : “Family prospers within the Nation, & Harmonious Family brings great Success”. “When Good resides within Nation, & Kindness prevails among People, Society prospers”. Sian Chay has therefore been actively participating in charitable activities organized by the community, institutions and community centres, so as to repay to the society the kindness it owes.
The event concluded successfully in a joyful & exuberant atmosphere.
